Next week is the fashion Super Bowl, and I’ve got tickets.
On the first Monday in May, the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts an impressive gala, chock full of celebrities and fashion aficionados, to showcase their latest exhibit. This year’s is entitled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, and it focuses around the emergence of the black dandy and the subsequent evolution of black style. Along with Anna Wintour and Lebron James, the co-chairs for this event include icons such as Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, Coleman Domingo and Lewis Hamilton. The dress code is “Tailored for You”, which I believe will drive much of the suiting/menswear attire.
Last week, I sat screaming at my laptop when I saw that I’d be attending Vogue Magazine’s Met Gala watch party, along with editors and fashion people alike. I’ve been following this year’s gala’s buzz closely, and to say that I’m elated to attend is an understatement, and have already crafted my own look accordingly. Of course, in the coming days I’ll be continuing to scour the internet for more clues, but so far here are this season’s runway trends I think will translate to the red carpet moments.

Exaggerated Silhouettes - Shoulders
Grab a gigantic, clunky car phone and call the 80s, because shoulder pads are back in a big way. I’m envisioning a lot of really angular looks, similar to the 2025 runway shows for Saint Laurent and Sarah Burton’s debut at Givenchy. Met Gala has to be bold, and with the “Tailored to You” dress code, I think broad shoulders - on men and women - are IN. I personally will be wearing padded shoulders for my look when I attend Vogue Magazine’s Met Gala watch party that night, courtesy of a very vintage trip to Cambridge’s Garment District.

Bolt Prints - Namely Polka Dot
Another retro resurgence has begun, and in this case, it’s the polka-dot print. While some may find it a bit to twee or Cruella, I personally love the pattern and we’ve been seeing it a lot in the fashion world. While I anticipate seeing a lot of really exciting prints and luxe fabrics, I just know polka dots will sashay their way across the red carpet next Monday in one way or another. My favorite polka dot looks as of late have been from Jacquemus and Fendi.

The IT Accessory - Brooches
Brooches quietly scream sophistication, and going with the emphasis on Dandyism in the “Superfine” theme, I think this trend will outshine earrings, statement necklaces, and multiple bracelets this year. My personal look includes a brooch (or two), and last week I thrifted a handful, so I’m excited to showcase these archive pieces. On the runway, I love Carolina Herrera’s rose brooches, and of course, Tory Burch. Additionally, with a theme that embraces tailoring such as suiting, brooches are a perfect addition to a lapel or collar.

Frills - Cravats and Lace
It would be easy to blame Ralph Lauren, whose show-stopping pre-fall show last week featured countless cravats, or even Chloe, who single-handedly brought boho back from the dead, but I think the Met Gala theme itself brought this trend back. One of the timeless hallmarks of the Dandy look is a frill at the neck, and I foresee less bowties and more ascots, cravats, and of course neckties. I think embracing lace, frills and frippery (especially at the collar and the wrist) will go a long way on the red carpet for the Gala.

My eyes will be peeled all week, looking for more sartorial clues. What is your all-time favorite Met Gala look? Is there a celeb you’re dying to see interpret this year’s theme and dress code? Let’s yap!
